Last Chance Qualifiers for the upcoming Players Tour events on Arena started on Monday. Jeskai Lukka Fires has been regarded as the best deck in the format since Season 2 of MagicFest Online, and with no apparent weakness in the field, its metagame share has surged to over 30%. While a ban seems imminent on Monday, there have been some interesting developments in the Standard environment.
With the growing number of Lukka decks in the metagame, some players have begun cutting Fires of Invention from the deck to improve in the mirror. This allows them to play four copies of Dovin’s Veto in the main deck and more instants in their sideboard. David Gonzalez was able to take this version of the deck to a victory in one of Wednesday’s LCQs.
Following Enrico Gobetti’s victory in the Red Bull Untapped International Qualifier, Azorius Control has gained in popularity. The addition of four Brazen Borrowers has given the traditional control deck more tools to disrupt its opponent and also close the game in a timely fashion. Martin Juza adopted four Brazen Borrowers in his Bant Ramp deck, which he used to win the Eleague Showdown playoffs on Wednesday. Expect to see more of the 3/1 flyer going forward!
Jund Sacrifice has reemerged as a contender, following Yuuki Ichikawa’s Top 8 finish in the Red Bull event. Jund won both Standard Challenge events on Magic Online over the weekend, as well. Notably, each of the winning lists added Korvold, Fae-Cursed King back into the deck, using one main and two sideboard.
Despite Lukka decks making up nearly 40% of the metagame, some other strategies have managed to push through and win LCQs this week. While playing Lukka may be the “correct” choice, it’s not the only strategy to find success. Check out these other LCQ winners!
